Soft launch pilot projects approved
An initial set of pilot projects will be delivered under the SBE Technical Assistance Platform this financial year, up until the end of March 2026.
These initial projects were co-designed with SIDS partners and the UK partners through a soft launch of the Platform.
The projects are:
UK partner: Cefas.
SIDS partners: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Cartagena Convention Secretariat; National Environment and Planning Agency, Jamaica; Environment Protection Agency, Guyana.
Countries: Jamaica & Guyana
This project will facilitate enhanced management of marine water quality in the Caribbean as a fundamental enabler for sustainable blue economies, initially focusing on Guyana and Jamaica, through advice and capacity building to achieve enhanced monitoring, assessment and management of water quality.
UK Partner: NOC
SIDS partner: The UWI Seismic Research Centre, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Rural Transformation, Industry and Labour.
Country: St Vincent & the Grenadines.
This project will provide the first characterisation of the offshore behaviour and impacts of hazardous volcanic sediment flows known as lahars; providing a currently absent evidence base from which to develop appropriate mitigation and adaptation strategies and enhance the future resilience of key but vulnerable fishery sites, critical offshore internet cables and other marine infrastructure that underpin the blue economy.
UK partner: UKHO
SIDS partner: Ministry of Public Works, Maritime Administration Department.
Country: Guyana.
This project will result in Guyana’s improved capacity and capability to deliver internationally mandated hydrographic services, which will enable growth in maritime trade, new developments in the blue economy and sustainable management and protection of the ocean and its resources. This will contribute to Guyana’s equitable Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).
UK partner: NOC
SIDS partner: Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Country: Dominica.
The Dominica Fisheries Division’s ocean observing platform will be upgraded, and a multi-agency team will be trained in its operation and maintenance, empowering the Commonwealth of Dominica to generate accurate, long-term data on Essential Ocean Variables (pH, subsurface temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen) to drive evidence based coral conservation, marine protected area management, and sustainable fisheries strategies.
UK partner: Cefas.
SIDS partner: Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism.
Country: Dominica & Grenada.
The project aims to increase the resilience to climate change in Caribbean fisheries and aquaculture by assessing the status of climate risk and adaptation needs in each eligible Caribbean country, and by providing recommendations to progress fisheries insurance to improve outcomes for fisherfolk and determine climate adaptation options in Dominica.
SBE round 2 projects
A second set of SBE Technical Assistance Platform projects have started, which will conclude by the end of March 2026. These projects were co-designed by SIDS partners and the SBE Platform UK partners, with support from the Development Advisory Panel (DAP) , to ensure that the specialist technical marine assistance provided supports poverty alleviation in a manner that is sensitive to, and ideally empowering of Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI).
The projects are:
UK partner: JNCC
SIDS partners: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Cartagena Convention Secretariat
Countries: Caribbean region
The project aims to enhance technical capability, regional cooperation and knowledge sharing in restoration efforts around the Caribbean, targeting at least one priority habitat type (seagrass beds) and its contributions to sustainable blue economies and local livelihoods.
UK Partner: Cefas
SIDS partner: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Cartagena Convention Secretariat
Country: Jamaica
This project will support primary pollution collection to address critical gaps in coastal water quality data both to contribute to pollution management in Jamaica and to inform a regional best practice case study that will strengthen pollution management approaches within the Wider Caribbean Region.
UK partner: JNCC
SIDS partner: Ministry of Tourism and Environment
Country:Maldives
This project will strengthen community monitoring and management of the K. Huraa mangrove protected area, safeguarding key ecosystem services and providing a blueprint for mangrove management and conservation throughout the Maldives.
UK partner: MMO
SIDS partner:Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA)
Country: Solomon Islands
This project will strengthen long-term regional capacity within the Pacific Islands to tackle IUU fishing through MCS technical training, innovation and knowledge exchange, to support sustainable fisheries, enhancing food security and promoting equitable economic development.
UK partner: MMO
SIDS partner: Belize Fisheries Department
Country: Belize
This project will set out a cohesive roadmap and Terms of Reference (ToR) for reinstating the Managed Access Committees (MACs), with sustainable and long-term practices in place, in which the government and fishing communities will be re-engaged in an accessible and inclusive way to sustain livelihoods and strengthen stewardship of Belize’s fisheries.
UK partner: Cefas
SIDS partner: Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) and Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD)
Country: Solomon Islands
To strengthen the oil spill preparedness and resilience of coastal communities in the Solomon Islands through targeted community awareness, school integration, and local capacity development, ensuring inclusive engagement of women, youth, and vulnerable groups in high-risk locations.
UK partner:Cefas
SIDS partner: Government of Grenada (GoG)
Country:Grenada
This project will add to the evidence base and strengthen local capacity in coastal erosion utilising new technologies to support planners and policymakers in implementing inclusive, evidence-informed decision-making under Grenada’s Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) policy and National Adaptation Plan (NAP). This will also result in more effective protection of economically vital yet socio-economically vulnerable coastal communities and ecosystems.
